Breaks for Carers
Breaks for Carers
The Breaks for Carers project was set up in the spring of 1998 with the aim of providing short breaks to carers living in South Gloucestershire. A volunteer is carefully matched with a family to keep the cared-for person company, while the carer has a few hours to themselves.
I had no idea what a difference having two hours a week to myself would make."
Do you need a break?
If you look after a relative or friend who, because of disability, confusion, frailty or illness cannot manage alone, then our service may be able to help you.
When is the service available?
The service usually operates during the day, Monday to Friday. However, some volunteers are able to offer evening or weekend support.
I can now go to the shops without rushing and without worrying about how my husband will be when I get home."
Who are the volunteers?
Volunteers are recruited by the Carers Centre and are selected for their honesty, reliability, communication skills and kindness. Often volunteers have been unpaid carers or have a care profession background. References are taken up and police checks made. All volunteers receive training and support from the project coordinator.
What will it cost?
The service is FREE! It is funded by South Gloucestershire Council. Volunteers' expenses are paid by the Carers Centre.
You have given us a model 'sitter'. She is a most appropriate choice for my wife. Things could not be better."
What will a volunteer do?
The volunteer visits the family's home to give the carer a break, typically for 2 to 3 hours per week. The volunteer will stay with, chat and keep company the person being cared for.
How do I apply for the scheme?
You can apply for this FREE service by telephoning CarersLine on 0117 965 2200. The project coordinator will then make an appointment to visit you at home. When a suitable volunteer is found, you will be introduced before agreeing a visiting arrangement.
