CarersLine Casestudy

Mr L rang CarersLine because his mother is in hospital following a fall. As a consequence, her memory problems and confusion have increased.  He is worried that the hospital are planning to discharge his mother soon and are assuming that he will be able to continue to care for her as before.

CarersLine advised Mr L that he should make his concerns clear to the ward staff.  The staff should then consider whether his mother is able to make decisions about going home herself or if others need to act in her best interest.  If his mother is going to need additional help in the home, they should refer to the hospital social work team.  Prior to discharge his mother should be given an assessment to look at her need for equipment, adaptations and help with daily living.  As a carer, Mr L should ask for an assessment of his needs to determine whether he is able to continue caring and if so, what help and support he will need to sustain his caring role.
