South Glos Strategy for Carers
South Gloucestershire Strategy for Carers 2011 - 2018: Update
The public consultation on the new South Glos Carers' Strategy has now closed. Nearly 260 carers shared their views at very successful events run by The Carers' Support Centre in Spring and Autumn 2010. 65 people made comments directly to South Glos Council through their online questionnaire and people were also able to respond via Facebook. The Carers' Support Centre is now working with South Glos Council, and NHS South Glos, to set up a plan of action to put the strategy into place. The Strategy will be launched at a Spring Launch Event, here at The Vassall Centre – details coming soon!
Why do we need a Strategy in South Glos?
1 in 3 people will find themselves taking on a caring role at some point in their lives especially as we know that more people are living longer and many will develop long term conditions. Many people balance paid work and unpaid caring for disabled family members and friends of all ages. Families may well live at a distance from the people they care for. The census of 2001 showed that there were 24,000 carers living in South Glos – but this is likely to have increased significantly since then.
Carers are of every age and from all groups in society. The experience of caring varies from person to person. Some people never identify themselves as a carer, but consider looking after a relative as part of their relationship with that person.
Because each caring situation is completely unique it is even more essential that this new strategy is driven by the needs of carers themselves.
