South Glos Strategy for Carers
Your Final Chance to Influence the South Gloucestershire Strategy for Carers 2011 - 2018...
The final round of public consultation on the new South Glos Carers' Strategy has just opened after very successful events run by The Princess Royal Trust Carers Centre in Spring 2010, with more than 130 carers sharing their views. The public consultation period runs from July 1st until October 31st 2010.
Why do we need a Strategy in South Glos?
1 in 3 people will find themselves taking on a caring role at some point in their lives especially as we know that more people are living longer and many will develop long term conditions. Many people balance paid work and unpaid caring for disabled family members and friends of all ages. Families may well live at a distance from the people they care for. The census of 2001 showed that there were 24,000 carers living in South Glos – but this is likely to have increased significantly since then.
Carers are of every age and from all groups in society. The experience of caring varies from person to person. Some people never identify themselves as a carer, but consider looking after a relative as part of their relationship with that person.
Because each caring situation is completely unique it is even more essential that this new strategy is driven by the needs of carers and that carers' voices can be clearly heard in the process.
